The Outriders

reply

The outrider's job is to watch for loose or runaway horses, and with their speedy and brave pony horses, 'pick up' (or catch) those horses before they have a chance to hurt themselves or someone else. Run-offs, (situations where the rider loses control of their horse), especially going the opposite flow of traffic, pose a serious threat to other riders on the track, so it's the outrider's job to be aware of everything going on around them and pick up loose horses as quickly as possible.

Re: Donuts-- A long-standing tradition at the track is that, if you should fall off a horse or get run off with, you must then buy donuts (or a case of beer) for the staff of the barn that horse is stabled at.

@feeweee: Thanks! It's kind of like Racing 101 with every page, haha. XD Glad you're enjoying it!

@blankd: Thank you! :3 There's always media coverage of the Kentucky Derby, of course, and popular movies like 'Secretariat,' but I wanted to show that so much of the racing industry happens behind the scenes of those big days, and a lot of the 'lingo' and things that contribute to getting a horse to the races begs some explaining for an audience that's kept mostly in the dark by the industry itself. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far! It's a fun and deeply personal project. :)

@Cannetella: Thanks! I always wondered why there wasn't one; especially as big as it is in Japan. They have manga about tennis, ping-pong, and golf-- but no horse racing that I've seen!

Really digging the extra info and the comic so far, it really is a different premise and the bit about the donuts gets a good chuckle.

Looking forward to more of this~

I've never seen a comic about horse racing before.

Actually, there is at least one manga about horse racing, though it's obviously never been translated. It's called Derby Queen, made 1999 by Ashihara Hinako. Chapter one is on mangafox. When I saw what you said,I was fairly certain I had seen a horse-racing manga floating around on the net.
